Carbon capture and storage (CCS) or carbon capture and sequestration is the process of capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) before it enters the atmosphere, and storing it in deep geological formations, for centuries or millennia. This technology is a fundamental element of the method by which Oil & Gas can be used to produce energy for power hungry processes without contributing to atmospheric increase in CO2 concentration.

The Wellynx Drilling and Completion engineers have recent experience with multi-well Carbon Capture and Storage projects.

Specific experience includes responsibility for the delivery of UK block 42/25d platform injection wells (3 wells) to the end of FEED (with Final Investment Decision – FID) for National Grid Carbon Ltd (NGC) to support the provision of Carbon Capture and Storage in the UK Yorkshire and Humber region. This project was known as ‘White Rose’.

Specific well related issues associated with CCS projects are significantly connected to the Compositional analysis of the CO2 to be captured and put into the store and the pressure of the store at the start of CCS activities.

Areas of completion design interest which set CCS well service apart from normal hydrocarbon well service include:

‘Production’ is the term used to describe ongoing extraction of the fluids from the reservoir, after wells and facilities construction work has been finished.

Optimizing Well Production often requires a holistic approach, with input from different disciplines, specifically Flow Assurance, Petroleum, Reservoir and Completion Engineering.

As the well starts producing, reservoir drive energy depletion and a plethora of potential flow impairments (formation damage, asphaltene deposition, water/gas breakthrough, etc.) can affect the overall well production performances. The older the field, the more impairment expected.

Identifying the nature of such issues and implementing the corrective actions to resolve or mitigate them is generally known as ‘debottlenecking’.
Debottlenecking is the process of analysing available data (and/or suggesting appropriate data collection) to identifying specific reasons for production decline and determine the most effective countermeasures.

When the life of a well is over, the well must be left in a condition which does not allow the remaining fluids contained in the reservoir to escape into the environment. The process by which the well is prepared, such that the fluids cannot ever get out of the well, is usually referred to as Plug and Abandonment.

The ‘plugging’ element usually involves a substantial amount of Cement being used to in effect restore the properties of the rock to its original condition. In other words, any remaining fluids have the same likelihood of escaping from the earth as it had prior to the well being drilled.

In view of the rapid shift towards low carbon energy sources, Well Decommissioning is an increasingly important aspect of the hydrocarbon Well Life Cycle and a major source of liabilities for countries, operators, contractors, and the public.
